Round 1: Combat Style
Saeko Busujima a high school student and captain of the kendo club and Mugen a former pirate and current samurai are facing one another in a battle of comparison to see whose combat style is more affective and more superior to the other so without further ado let us begin. Saeko Busujima is a very skilled Japanese swordsmen and overall combatant; she has proved this with her countless confrontations with the un-dead in which she has been seen to slice and dice zombies with the greatest of ease and enjoys delivering pain and misery immensely, she also shows such incredible speed that allows her to dodge a sniper bullet with her forsaken tits. But besides all the unrealistic physics of H.O.T.D. Saeko is shown to be one of the most bad-ass female characters in H.O.T.D., she also has a knack for killing which explains her none hesitant attitude when facing zombies and her overall enjoyment in the art of killing. Mugen is also a very skilled samurai in the art of the Champloo which is a style that he has seen to use on many occasions, this style has been compared to styles such as capoeira and even break dancing with a sword.
As Saeko is the most bad-ass female of her respected series there is no doubt that Mugen is the most bad-ass character overall of Samurai Champloo if not one of the most bad-ass of all time, now Saeko’s swordsmen style is very impressive to those of a professional it can hardly be thought to be the best. Saeko’s style has mostly been useful in the fight against the un-dead rather than the living which reduces the surrounding aspect of her skills, whereas Mugen who has seen to face even the most legendary of swordsmen in his time and also facing his own hoard of zombies along the way. Mugen has faced a larger and broader variety of opponents then Saeko which widens the potential of his fighting style and shows its usefulness in any situation, even though Saeko’s style can be an advantage when facing zombies it is not enough when faced against the legendary style of the Champloo.
Round 2: Survival Skills
This round represents something that both these characters constantly must do to keep the progression of their respective stories, and that would be survival. In Saeko’s case she is constantly in threat against hoards of the un-dead and uses her trusty blade to keep her and her fellow survivors out of harm’s way, while Mugen on the other hand is on a perilous journey to find the Samurai Who Smells of Sunflowers and is in constant danger against bandits and pirates along the way. Saeko’s quarrel with the zombie predators have served her well so far as she was merely captain of her kendo club at high school she has now ascended into a bloody zombie slayer with the help of her new friends, Saeko has a lot of bloodlust when it comes to killing the un-dead which aids her in the global crisis, she is said to be one of the strongest survivors in the entire anime and could pretty much run solo through the apocalypse if she ever needed to. It also helps that she is the only trained and qualified person in H.O.T.D. out of all the survivors, especially the females; however Mugen has faced his fair share of problems as well.
Throughout his life he has stood face to face with death on many occasions even more then Saeko, he constantly puts up with fighting goons and bandits on a daily basis, whether it be on his own or sometimes bringing others with him. He shares a randomly heated rivalry with samurai traveller Jin whom he wants to viciously kill any chance he has and vice versa, though sometimes they work together and seem to be friends they still share hatred for one another. Survival also depends on the type of survival that’s involved, whilst Saeko deals with the trouble of trying to live through a zombie apocalypse with the fear of death every day, Mugen as a traveller must constantly hunt for his food which ends up with him and his friends trying to make money for it, Mugen’s mouth also places him in precarious situations against the law. At first glance it may seem that Saeko possesses better survival skills due to her daily confrontations with zombies, however Mugen has Saeko beat based on the fact that he encounters enemies far more deadly, even though zombies possess immortal abilities they also have lack of communication or knowledge, whereas the bandits and pirates of Samurai Champloo possess weapons and can think on their toes. So with these facts I have to give it to Mugen mainly cause he handles his problems better and manages to survive even in the toughest situations, not saying that Saeko can’t however Mugen does it better and that’s why he takes a point in Survival Skills.
