Quarter Finals - Match #1: Sousuke Sagara vs Mugen

Round 1 – Brains
And the wait is over, Sousuke Sagara from Full Metal Panic! takes on Samurai Champloo’s Mugen, so without further ado let’s begin this battle of wits.

For those who have seen both the Full Metal Panic! and Samurai Champloo Anime series, it’s easy to say that neither Sousuke nor Mugen are the brightest bunch when it comes to brains, as Sousuke suffers with everyday situations such as socializing with others and simply living the life of a normal teenager while Mugen finds trouble in small things like reading and common sense, however neither character appear to be completely stupid as both show a fair understanding in combat. But because this match is based on Brains and not Bronze just yet, it would obviously appear that Sousuke Sagara would be the wiser man in the battle of brains as he expresses a vast knowledge in military combat and tactics along with an actual education to follow whereas Mugen who was merely self-taught in everything and contains no type of formal education in his life apart from his lessons in learning how to read Japanese, overall I award this round to Sgt. Sousuke Sagara.

Sousuke’s Statistics
Common Sense: 5
Formal Education: 8
Manipulative Potential: 0

Unique Knowledge: Military Training/Mech Pilot

Mugen’s Statistics
Common Sense: 3

Manipulative Potential: 0
Combat Tactics: 6
Unique Knowledge: Art of the Champloo

Round 2 – Bronze
I will admit the battle of brains wasn’t the most fair of comparisons when you have a military genius against a poor broke samurai, nonetheless we shall continue with Round 2 – Bronze. This round is not simply measured in brute strength but also in combat skills, physical prowess and even god-like powers or abilities if any.

Sousuke himself received physical training as a Gorilla Soldier during his early childhood that ended up building him into a stone cold and lethal killer; throughout his years as a soldier he has been able to keep a calm and cool appearance even in the toughest situations. Sousuke is very skilled when it comes to handling firearms in battle and even adapting to hand to hand combat, he is very strategic when in the midst of battle always calculating the best result though some outcomes may not always be as satisfactory as others, Sousuke’s vast military experience and skills with piloting mechs gives him a great deal of potentially being the perfect soldier.

Mugen on the other hand was a self-taught samurai who later began living his days as a traveller, he is cocky, arrogant and very skilled in the art of Champloo, a combat style that Mugen has become accustomed to over the years. He has adapted to all types of enemies ranging from gun wielding pirates to baseball players to undead savages, his physical prowess is also impressive with his quick evasive skills, and fast slicing ability. Both characters share the ability to adapt to new situations and enemies, with Sousuke’s skills in the Arbalest truly showcasing his true capabilities in combat this fact does not adequately apply to the standards of this round and therefore does not serve proper meaning in this round, though Sousuke’s military skills and handling in firearms are impresseive, Mugen’s physical and combat abilities exceed Sousuke’s by a reasonable margin given that fact that Mugen has survived the toughest of beatings and tortures this shows his superiority in durability, and with great skill, speed and endurance in his back pocket, this round fairly goes to Mugen.

Round 3 – 1v1 Situation
Scenario: Sousuke Sagara wakes up in the Arbalest and it appears to be critically damaged, he opens the cockpit and finds himself in Ancient Japan. He checks the Arbalest and realizes that the damage is too great and must somehow seek repairs, he attempts to signal HQ but the telecommunications servers are down, Sousuke finds this to be very suspicious and leaves the Arbalest to investigate. He stumbles upon a village where he is greeted by many of the humble and kind villagers; he encounters a man who is standing off against 3 other men, Sousuke attempts to help however the man kills these thugs with the use of his blade. Sousuke is impressed and asks for the man’s name, he responds with the name Mugen,  Sousuke congratulates him on his victory but begins to critique him on his poor fighting technique the Champloo Style.

Mugen takes this as an insult and begins to slash his sword to Sousuke, Sousuke evades every swing and pulls out his knife, Mugen is frustrated and challenges Sousuke, Sousuke accepts and instantly pulls out his pistol and begins shooting Mugen. Surprised by this attack Mugen runs for cover, Mugen did not expect Sousuke to have a projectile type weapon and decides to throw a barrage of debris towards Sousuke, Sousuke is distracted by the debris as Mugen runs towards him with his sword. Mugen lunges towards Sousuke however Sousuke is cut across his chest, Sousuke out of desperation tosses a flashbang that stuns Mugen, Mugen then opens his eyes and realizes Sousuke has disappeared; Mugen suspects a trap and quickly attempts to find Sousuke. However it is too late and a gunshot is heard and Mugen falls to the ground, it is then revealed that Sousuke had hidden in a nearby bush and set up a sniper rifle, once it was set he fired against Mugen and ended the fight, Sousuke suddenly awoken realizing that it was only a dream.
